Small / Medium Counterbalance
Perhaps the most popular of all materials handling equipment. Designed to be easy to operate and a with a wide choice of models, these machines are equally at home stacking stock in a tight warehouse as they are transporting goods around site and loading vehicles. Machines in this category can be powered by a diesel or LPG combustion engine or alternatively by an electric battery.
Small machines have a lifting capacity upto 5,000Kg. Medium size machines can lift between 5,000kg - 15,000Kg. Please view our Large Counterbalance page dedicated to larger machines.
Known Operating Problems
- Tip over caused by cornering too fast, turning with elevated loads or incorrect operation on slopes. Operators often attempt to jump clear in these situations resulting in being trapped and crushed.
- These machines are often operated in close proximity to pedestrians. Many get crushed behind reversing trucks or struck in danger area's like doorways & blind corners.
- Expensive machine, building & stock damage often occurs as operators get complacent.
Course Outline
Who Should Attend.
This course is for all those who are due to renew thier existing or recently expired licence. This is required at 3 yearly intervals.
Learning Objectives.
- To remind delegates of the known dangers whilst operating these machines.
- Identify and correct any bad operating habits.
- Ensure delegates are operating to accepted standards through theoretical and operational tests.
- Ensure operators can perform a thorough pre-use safety check of the machine.

Course Content.
- Theoretical presentation & discussion
- Practical session where delegates operating standards are observed, bad habits identified, discussed and corrected.
- Practical session covering the essential pre-use machine safety check
Testing.
- Written theoretical test
- Practical test of pre-use check
- Practical operational test
Certification
Upon sucessful completion, candidates will be entered onto the AITT national register (ACORNS). This allows independent verification of qualification. They also recieve;
- Standard A4 size certificate
- Digital copy of the certificate
- Plastic, credit card size photo ID card

This course is aimed at those who have experience operating the machine but have never attended a formal course. Many operators are "self taught" or shown "how to" by colleagues so whilst they have a limited ability to operate the machine, they lack any theoretical knowledge and appreciation of the dangers involved. They will typically also have many, potentially dangerous bad habits.

- To ensure operators are made aware of the known dangers whilst operating these machines.
- Enure operators have all the required theoretical knowledge.
- Identify and correct any bad operating habits. Instill correct operational procedures.
- Ensure delegates are operating to accepted standards through theoretical and operational tests.
- Ensure operators can perform a thorough pre-use safety check of the machine.

- Practical sessions where delegates operating standards are observed, bad habits identified, discussed and corrected. Any area's where the operators abilities are missing or below standard are identified and corrected.
- Practical session covering the essential pre-use machine safety check

- Practical test of pre-use check
- Practical operational test
Certification

- Progressive practical sessions where operators learn all the basic skills including steering, braking, reversing, lifting, lorry loading etc.

Testing.
- Written theoretical test
- Practical test of pre-use check
- Practical operational test
